Abstract
Introduction visual acuity reference values in children have yet to be determined in Colombia, which is why these parameters are interpreted according to the values reported for child population in europe and the united states. Objective To determine the normal visual acuity values in children between the ages of three and six in the Chapinero locality in Bogota. Materials and Methods the study was observational, descriptive and cross-sectional. Three hundred and eightyfive (385) children were included, based on the inclusion criteria. Visual acuity was measured with high contrast Lea symbols and HOTV. The information was processed with the sPss 19 program. Results The visual acuity range for the entire group was from 0.2 (20/32) to -0.2 (20/12.5) with an average of 0.0 (20/20). The 5th and 95th percentiles for the group of three-year-old children were -0.2 and 0.2; -01 and 0.2 for the group of four-year-old children; -0.1 and 0.1 for the group of fiveyear-old children; and -0.2 and 0.1 for the group of six-year-old children. Conclusions This study shows normal visual acuity values in a school child population without any significant refractive errors or any other ocular abnormalities.
