Abstract
This article proposes some guidelines to correct ametropias in children, based on a 22 year clinic experience. Unlike ametropias correction in adults where the parameter is to improve vision and to get visual comfort, in children, besides that, the most important purpose is to empower the vision development and the maturity of visual system. Therefore, it is necessary to understand that although the defect correction may achieve that purpose, it may also become a factor that unbalances the emmetropization process. This article proposes some guidelines for the optometrist to be careful when correcting ametropias in children and when choosing the most appropriate moment to correct them.
