Students’ concepts and knowledge regarding ocular industrial security in the workshops of the Instituto Técnico Industrial Piloto in Bogotá

Abstract

Every technical high education institution must know the concept students have regarding ocular industrial security, because incidents and accidents in students’ eyes depend on this knowledge. Methods: in the Instituto Técnico Industrial Piloto in Bogotá, a survey was done with five close questions to 582 students who work in the School workshops in the morning and in the afternoon schedule, in order to know the concepts they have regarding industrial security. The results showed that students in the afternoon schedule almost always wear personal eye protection elements and in the morning schedule wear them in a lower percentage. Students in both schedules report that they always follow the rules and take into account the signals located in the workshops regarding eye protection, with percentages between 46,60% and 45,83%. Students in both schedules say that they know the risks may provoke eye accidents in the workshops and they think the most dangerous workshop is metalworking, followed by cabinet making. Between 85,71% and 88,89% of the students in both schedules have not suffered eye accidents in the workshops. Conclusions: personal protection elements are almost always used in both schedules and students follow the rules and take into account the signals, and there fore there has been a low percentage of eye accidents according to statistic reports in previous years, 2003-2005.
