Abstract

In this study the symptomatology of 60 youngsters between 6 and 15 was compared. They showed low ametropias along with other symptoms. The study was carried out in Bogotá, Colombia. The study divided the sample at random in two equal groups. One of the groups received permanent optical correction. The other group was a control group to which optical correction was not prescribed. The two groups displayed similar symptomatology at the beginning: bulbar hyperemia 60%, tarsal hyperemia 50%, ocular irritation 40%, pruritus 38%, frontal migraine 13%, tears 13%, asthenopia while reading 21% among others. After using the optical correction for three months, group one displayed a considerable decrease in symptomatology. Out of 12 initial symptoms, seven disappeared and the five others showed a decreases between 86% and 59%. This ndicates that the use of the optical correction in children with low ametropias eliminates or drastically reduces its symptomatology, regardless of its accommodation amplitude.
