Condition of the Eye Surface Associated with Daily Activities in Children Aged Eight to Twelve in Bogotá

Abstract

The ocular surface is an integrated unit of ocular structures that is normally intact and in constant balance; However, extrinsic factors such as prolonged exposure to electronic screens, environmental pollution, among others, affect their integrity in people of all ages, including children. Objective: Determine changes in the ocular surface in healthy children from 8 to 12 years old in the city of Bogotá. Methodology: Cross-sectional descriptive observational study. Results: 30 patients were evaluated with a median age of 9 years and an IQR of 2, 56.7% female and 43.3% male. The median value of NIKBUT was 7.83s in OD (IQR 12.43), in LE 7.16s (IQR 7.5), the thickness of the tear meniscus was 0.21mm OD (IQR 0.17) and in LE 0. .25 mm (IQR 0.18mm). The median Schirmer I was in ODI 32.5 mm (IQR of 19) BUT median OD 6.98s (IQR of 5.96) and OI 6.72s (IQR 4.92). Many patients reported mild symptoms in different activities in the home, school, transportation, and outdoor environments. In the development of activities in front of screens, the highest frequency was 1 hour on TV devices (40%) and Cellular (26.7%), followed by 23% for 2 hours, 13% for 3 hours and a 10% for ≥3 hrs. Conclusions: The findings of this study show a mild to moderate alteration in the clinical parameters of the ocular surface and mild symptomatology related to the development of various ocular activities.
