Application of Informed Consent by Optometry Students at La Salle University in Clinical Practice

Abstract

Informed consent is a medical-legal document being part of Colombian regulations since 1981. It is an ethical requirement and a patient’s right to medical procedures and care. Although the application of informed consent in the Optometry Clinic of the Universidad de la Salle, by students at practicum, before performing different procedures on the patient, is daily, there was no information on the level of knowledge about it and its application. The objective of this study is to determine the knowledge of optometry’s students about informed consent and how they apply it in the context of their clinical practice. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out, in which students filled out a self-administered knowledge questionnaire and were observed during the process of obtaining consent from patients and a checklist was filled out. A high percentage of shortcomings was evidenced in some relevant items at the time of indicating who could expand on the information provided. It is concluded that students have a high theoretical knowledge of the content of informed consent and give it great importance as a requirement to perform specific optometric procedures in the Optometry Clinic. It is recommended constant training to the practitioners to obtain informed consent.
