Allergic conjunctivitis, a visible problem in hospitals of Bogotá and Cundinamarca

Abstract

<p>This descriptive research wanted to know prevalence of allergic conjunctivitis in two medical institutions in Bogotá and three in Cundinamarca from March 2006 to February 2007. 813 patients constitute the sample of this study. They attended to the optometry and ophthalmology consultations in the Rafael Uribe Uribe Hospital and Medical Center San Camilo in Bogotá, and to El Salvador Hospital in Unabté, San Rafael Hospital in Girardot and Mario Gaitán Yanguas in Soacha, these three in Cundinamarca. The data collection method was through the optometric examination during the months of the study in each one of the above mentioned hospitals, after the exam standardization. As a result, it was observed that allergic conjunctivitis prevalence was 21.8% in the group of age between 0 – 17, 18% in the group of age between 18 -35 and 9.8% in the group of age between 36 – 53 and women presented the highest prevalence with 15.5%.</p>
