Ametropia correction by modifying the refraction index

Abstract

There is no simple answer to this question but certainly it is a mathematical possibility. However, determination of the required index for a specific ametropia may present several difficulties. For one, the index of refraction determines both the power of the cornea and the focal length of the optical system of the eye, thus, the matter is reduced to find mathematical formula involving both the cornea and the focal length. The search of a substance to replace the vitreous for a specific ametropia belongs to the domain of chemistry and physics. Finally, it is not possible to expect astigmatic o presbyopic corrections through modifications of the index of refraction. However, the mathematical exercise may be useful for future investigators that may be interested in the subject.
